An accidental discovery

That's surprising!

I was brushing my teeth when the jeans my son had left hanging over the towel rack fell to the floor and a condom tumbled out of the back.

I cocked my head and stared at the lime-green packet on the bathroom linoleum. The package boasted a tropical delight.

Is that a ... no, it isn't ... oh, it is ... I stared some more. My son had recently turned 16. I thought I had more time before I had to deal with this.

I had always been open with Chris about. I casually passed on information when appropriate, or honestly answered his questions, always asked in the car while I was driving on the highway.

His first question, when he was 8, was, "Mom, how do men have sex with each other?"

My face must have registered some surprise, but since I was gunning the car, we both stared straight ahead. After a deep breath, a moment of thought and a decision to explain one sex act as simply as possible, I told him. Chris thought it was the funniest thing he had ever heard. He howled and slapped his leg as we drove.

"Well, if you aren't mature enough to have this discussion," I muttered.

"No, no." Chris composed himself.

On The Road!

From then on, as we crisscrossed the city, we discussed everything from the responsibility of to the emotional aspects of having a sexual relationship. Chris found the perfect way to get information from me without ever having to look me in the eye.

Now, eight years later, the questions had stopped and I was facing reality in a lime-green package.

Chris didn't have a steady girlfriend yet (that I knew of), although there were a few girls he was hanging out with. I returned the condom to his pocket and carefully threaded the jeans back over the towel rack.

I went into the kitchen, sat down and turned to our brown tabby cat, Katie. "What do I do now?" Katie stretched and preened in hopes of a belly rub. I scratched her tummy. Then

I put on my jacket and walked down the street to the drugstore.

I went to the family planning aisle and scanned the rack for the same brightly packaged brand of condoms. I bought the biggest box I could find, went home, placed the drugstore shopping bag over the back of his bedroom doorknob and started to make dinner.

I was chopping onions and peppers for fajitas when Chris came home from school and walked into the kitchen.

"Hi Mom." He slapped his skateboard under one arm. He was wearing a white shirt and black pants, part of his school uniform. His unruly blond hair was getting long, pushing the limit of his school dress code no doubt. Soon the vice-principal would tell him to cut it.

A Gift For My Son!

At 6 foot 2, with the brawny build of a rugby player, he towered over me.

"Hi sweetie." I kept chopping.

He walked into the hallway and I could hear the bag

crinkle as he placed his hand on his bedroom doorknob. There was silence, then more crinkling.

He poked his head around the kitchen door. "Uh, Mom? What's this about?"

I let out a short breath and turned to face him.

"Well, the jeans you left in the bathroom fell down and a condom fell out of your back pocket. And I figured that if you were sexually active or thinking of being sexually active, then you should take care of yourself."

He joined me in saying, "Take care of yourself." I had said it often enough.

His eyes sparkled and he smiled. "Oh Mom, you are so chills. Can I talk to you about this?"

"Sure."
